Want to know how to calculate the quantity of soil needed for your landscaping project?
Calculating the quantity of planting soil required for your lawn, flower bed, or vegetable garden is easy! All you have to do is measure the length and width of the area to be covered, then determine the thickness to be filled in based on the existing soil and the level to be reached if you have to do any levelling. Once you have these measurements, use our online bulk calculator to instantly get the exact quantity of garden soil or lawn soil you need.
Average Soil Thickness Required
Lawn sod
6 to 8 inches
The root system of a lawn reaches an average depth of 5-6 inches, so 6 to 8 inches of good soil are enough for a lawn to thrive.
Vegetable garden
10 to 12 inches
The quantity depends on the quality of the existing soil: if it’s rich and loose, you’ll need less garden soil than if it’s poor and difficult to work.
Flower bed
12 to 18 inches
The root system of perennial and annual flowers requires about 12 inches of good garden soil, whereas that of shrubs, which goes deeper into the soil, requires about 18 inches.

When and how to install lawn sod in Quebec
In Quebec, spring and fall are the perfect seasons to lay grass sod because these periods offer mild temperatures and regular rainfall. Of course, you can also lay sod during the summer, but the risk of heat waves and watering bans can jeopardize the success of your project.
Once you have set the installation date, follow these steps:
- Preparing the soil: Add 4 to 6 inches of quality lawn soil, level with a bow rake, use a lawn roller to lightly compact the soil, and spread a rooting fertilizer.
- Laying the sod: Start laying at the back of the yard to avoid trampling the lawn unnecessarily. Unroll a first row of turf, placing each roll one after the other closely to avoid gaps but taking care not to overlap them. Install the second row, starting with a half-length so that the joints cross to form a brick pattern. Use a snap-off utility knife to make the cuts.
- Watering generously: As soon as a section of the yard is covered, start watering generously to help the grass take root. Oscillating sprinklers come in handy at this stage.
As you can see, sod laying is a fairly straightforward task you can do yourself. By following these steps, you’ll be on your way to a healthy, beautiful lawn in no time!
Post-laying lawn care
There are three things you can do to help your new lawn sod take root:
- Water the lawn thoroughly once or twice a day for the first two to three weeks.
- Avoid walking on the lawn during this period.
- Mow the lawn on the third week following installation at a mowing height of three to four inches.
Once the lawn has taken root, routine maintenance will be necessary, including mowing, watering, and fertilizing. You can consult the lawn section of our blog for more information on this subject, or ask our experts at the garden centre for advice!
