Fall Perennial Flowers and Grasses for a Colorful Season

Transform your summer yard into an autumn paradise with the most beautiful fall-blooming plants!

Chrysanthemums—The stars of the season

With their spectacular blooms, chrysanthemums are a fall must-have in Quebec. Available in a myriad of vibrant colors, they are perfectly in tune with the season. Whereas certain varieties, such as florist mums, are treated as annuals in our climate, others withstand the cold. Hybrid types, often known as garden mums, prove remarkably hardy and will grace your flower beds with blooms year after year—like the Morden, Minn, Firecracker and Mammoth series.

Fall perennials for colorful flowers and foliage

A wide variety of perennials can grace your flower beds and planters throughout the fall. Among these, autumn-blooming anemones marvel with their delicate petals and vibrant yellow hearts. Asters, with their small, star-shaped flowers, are available in a host of hues to brighten up garden beds. Echinacea, with gorgeous, bright-colored flowers, add a touch of fall beauty to any landscaping. Other autumn wonders include chelone, helenium, cimicifuga simplex, eupatorium, vernonia, perennial sunflowers, aconites, heuchera and bergenia.

Three favorites of Quebec gardeners:
hydrangeas, rudbeckias and fall sedums

Hydrangeas, rudbeckias and fall sedums are among the most popular choices for flower beds in Quebec because they are easy to care for and provide bright, colorful blooms. Hydrangeas offer an impressive diversity of shapes and colors, from the cone-shaped, color-shifting panicles to the classic white bouquets of hydrangea arborescens “Annabelle.” Rudbeckias brighten up gardens with their vibrant yellow hues enhanced by their contrasting black hearts. As for autumn sedums, they are a sure bet, withstanding almost all conditions with their foliage ranging from blue-green to deep purple and their pink-red or violet flowers.

Plant bulbs in the fall to enjoy a blooming spring

For those who can’t wait until June for the first flowers to appear, don’t forget to plant bulbs at the end of September. Crocuses, snowdrops, narcissi, hyacinths, lilies of the valley, daffodils and tulips will add color to your flower beds as soon as the warm weather returns in April.

Care for your lawn—apply a fall lawn fertilizer

A healthy lawn will enhance your entire landscaping, so it’s important to take good care of it. Fertilize it twice during the fall, once between mid-August and mid-September to repair summer damage and once toward the end of October to protect it from the cold. The fertilizer from the second application will be absorbed by the roots, which remain active even if the visible part of the grass is no longer growing. The best fall fertilizer is one rich in potassium because this element increases the lawn’s overall resistance to cold, disease and insects. Additionally, the nitrogen present in the fertilizer will be stored in the roots and promote rapid growth in the spring.
