For an in-ground vegetable garden, you need one of our garden soil mixes enriched with compost and organic matter. This type of loose, well-drained soil will encourage lush growth of your favorite vegetables.
For raised beds or potted gardens, you’ll need specially designed potting soil. The mixes we offer in our store contain sphagnum peat moss, coconut fiber, compost, and slow-release organic fertilizers. These mixes are lighter and less easily compacted, and they retain more water, which is essential because soil in containers dries out faster than soil in open-ground vegetable gardens.

A vegetable garden for a family of four
Starting an in-ground vegetable garden to feed a family of four is easier than you think, and it’s a rewarding experience that reaps rewards every day. Here are the key steps to starting your vegetable garden from scratch:
- Choose the right location: Choose a sunny spot because your vegetables need at least eight hours of direct sunlight a day for optimal results.
- Prepare the soil: Remove the lawn to an area of two meters by four meters, then spread a good amount of garden soil over the entire surface and incorporate it into the existing soil. Make sure that the level of your vegetable garden exceeds the surrounding soil to facilitate drainage.
- Make garden rows: Prepare your rows by creating small raised beds that will allow excess water to drain off more easily and make it more convenient for you to move around the garden.
- Plant vegetables: Once the risk of frost has passed, plant your vegetable plants and seeds, preferably on a cloudy day to avoid burning the leaves of your plants. Then water them generously.
